"A grain of Christian Science...

"A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 449). Such a grain was sown in the thought of our family by my mother, who, though she passed on when her three children were just a few years old, was faithful to what she understood of Christian Science. The grain lay dormant during school years, and we became members of Protestant churches. We were, in fact, quite antagonistic to what we thought Christian Science to be.

However, a great need turned me to this precious Science, and it proved to be the most valuable thing in my life. In my senior year at a large university I failed and had to leave. The shock and humiliation were devastating; it seemed the end of the world had come for me.

About that time my father married another Christian Scientist. She offered to help me by prayer if I would read the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health. I felt a blind resistance to this; but my need was so great that I finally agreed, retaining nevertheless a desire to argue about many of the things I read. My stepmother with loving wisdom told me to jot down my questions, saying we would talk about them some day.
