The Class Learns a Lesson of Love

A teacher in a branch church Sunday School was instructing a class of twelve-year-old pupils how to use Christian Science, encouraging them to make their own demonstrations and to rely upon God in all their activities. One of the girls brought up a problem which she was experiencing in school. She told the class that she was going upstairs at school two steps at a time when the teacher admonished her for running. Janet tried to explain that she was not running, but the teacher would not listen and replied that she would give her two demerits, one for running and another for answering back. Janet was an A student, and it hurt her pride to be given two demerits; so she was resentful.

Since Janet was expressing hate and resentment, the Sunday School teacher discussed the importance of expressing love. She told the class that God is Love and that His reflection is kind, compassionate, forgiving, tolerant, thoughtful, intelligent, just, and understanding. She showed them too that Janet's teacher had all these qualities because she was the image and reflection of all that God is and that if Janet would see her as reflecting these qualities, the demerits would be erased; she must realize this all day. Janet could not understand how this could be since the demerits were written in ink, but she promised to trust God and see her teacher's real nature as God's image and likeness.

The following Sunday Janet joyously greeted the class, "It works!" Then she said that on the Friday following the discussion in their class, the teacher gave her four A's, which more than erased the two demerits, and that the teacher was being kind.
