I am grateful for a religion that shows me the reason for my existence and how to live harmoniously, for an understanding of God as Principle, for the life of Christ Jesus, our Exemplar and Way-shower, and for Christian Science, the laws and rules of which, when obeyed, bring health, peace, and joy, here and now.

At a time when my young son became quite ill with a continuous cough and fever, I felt unworthy to ask for help in Christian Science, because I had departed from its teachings. Thus I turned to a physician, who hurried the child to a hospital. There they took X rays, which showed that the child had swallowed a nail that had lodged in one of his lungs. Specialists were called in who said it could not be dislodged and removed except by an operation. Awaiting this operation, the child was given no medication.

In deep despair because I had not relied on God for healing, I could refrain no longer from calling on a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to help my son. These words which she quoted from the Bible were a great comfort: "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebr. 4:12).
