As a child I was deprived of a normal home life. Because of my mother's early passing, I lived first with one, then with another member of the family. Finally, at a very early age, I went to work in the business world to earn my own way.
Living alone in a large city, I was ignorant of how one might find or make opportunities to get to know people. This resulted in my being alone a great deal, and I developed a sense of repression, fear, lack, and a tendency to retreat from normal girlhood experiences.
My acquaintance with Christian Science came about as a result of a deep desire for self-improvement. I began by attending in succession the different Protestant churches in my neighborhood. When I attended my first Christian Science service, I knew I had found my church home. It did not occur to me to attend church elsewhere again. I soon bought the textbooks, the Holy Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
