One day I was riding a horse...

One day I was riding a horse that broke into a run as we were crossing a paved street. One stirrup broke, and I was thrown headfirst onto the street. An emergency police car drove me to a hospital. When my mother was reached, she immediately called a Christian Science practitioner, who began to pray for me. On arriving at the hospital, my mother was told by the doctor in attendance that I had lost so much blood it would be useless to give me a blood transfusion and that he did not expect me to live beyond three hours at the most.

My mother spent the night in my hospital room, sitting by my bed with her copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in her hands, studying and praying. In the morning the doctor took X rays and examined my condition further. Although I was only semiconscious, I heard some of his report to my mother.

Among other things, I had a fractured skull, a ruptured eardrum, a sprained ankle, and some internal injuries, the extent of which he was not sure about. This time he predicted that I would be deaf in one ear, that my eyesight would be impaired, and that I probably would not be able to stand up and walk normally again. His statements were reported to the practitioner by my mother.
