With all my heart I thank...
With all my heart I thank our beloved Leader for the wonderful teaching of Christian Science.
When I was fifteen years of age my mother was ill for many weeks with a serious case of pleurisy. After various doctors had treated her and she did not improve but grew worse, I heard one of them tell my father one evening that she would have to go to a sanatorium for tubercular patients. We were in great distress.
Soon after this an uncle came to see us, and he told us of Science. The next day my father went to see a Christian Science practitioner in a nearby city and asked him for prayerful help for my mother. Three days later I found her in the kitchen. She was healed.
About this time I suffered severe pain for more than a year from ringworm. It spread over both hands up to my wrists. We tried many remedies and went to various doctors, but they could do nothing for me.
I was permitted to continue attending school, but I had a hard time there. A long time after my mother had been healed, she asked the practitioner whether he could do anything for my hands. He assured her that I could be healed through prayer. In about two weeks my hands were normal.
At one time while staying with a friend in another country in connection with a sports event, I came down with the grippe. I tried to put into practice what I knew of Christian Science and to deny the error firmly, but it did not yield. So I picked up a copy of The Christian Science Journal and found in it the address of a local practitioner. The following morning, Sunday, I called him, and he was kind enough to help me at once.
As I was reading the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly and other passages he had asked me to read, I felt so much better that I decided to go to church. During the service a sense of peace and happiness came over me. The practitioner continued to work for me, and the next day I went to see him. I was well during the remainder of my stay away from home.
When our daughter was thirteen and a half, she was afflicted with a skin disease. A practitioner worked untiringly, and I too tried to reject the error and to convince the child as well as my wife that the condition was only a mortal belief, that imperfection and sickness are not of God. Because of regulations we had to call the school doctor, but we did not use any of the remedies he prescribed. After eighteen months her hands became normal again.
Words are inadequate to express what Christian Science means to me. I am indeed grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church. "Bless the Lord, O my soul" (Ps. 103:1).—Heinrich Balmer, Wilderswil/Interlaken, Bern, Switzerland.
