"To those leaning on the sustaining...

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Pref., p vii). These words by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, helped me a number of years ago at the time of the birth of my daughter.

As required by the laws of the state in which I resided, I engaged a medical doctor, but I also engaged a Christian Science nurse. This I did six months before the baby was due. There was no physical examination, and no further contact was made with the doctor until it was time for the baby to arrive. Then the doctor examined me, and I was told I would have to be rushed to the hospital for a Caesarean section, because he found I had a deformed pelvis. He stated that neither the baby nor I could survive if I did not have this operation.

I called the Christian Science practitioner who had been treating me throughout the time, and she reminded me that the decision rested with me. Then she repeated the words quoted above. I decided then and there to lean "on the sustaining infinite" and trust God to see us through.
