Our first experience with Christian Science...

Our first experience with Christian Science healing occurred many years ago when our thirteen-year-old daughter became ill with rheumatic fever. During several weeks of medical treatment, she grew steadily worse. I then recalled a remarkable Christian Science healing of a neighbor which I had seen fifteen years before and decided to try it for our daughter.

Borrowing from a friend a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I took it home and began to read the chapter on Prayer. Very soon I felt lifted up, inspired. And I knew that what I was reading was the truth. For several hours I read to our daughter. At first, she seemed to be in considerable distress. But after listening to a page or two of the reading, she expressed real interest. Her facial expression and her whole attitude completely changed, and the pain disappeared.

During the afternoon of that day, however, the symptoms were greatly aggravated. I became alarmed, because I did not know that it was chemicalization that was taking place. In a very few hours the symptoms lessened, and I soon bewail to see that she was healed. Several weeks later, in reading our textbook, I came upon the description of chemicalization, and then I understood. One of the passages reads (pp. 168, 169), "By chemicalization I mean the process which mortal mind and body undergo in the change of belief from a material to a spiritual basis."
