While visiting in a large city, I met a group of Christian Scientists whose genuine expressions of joy, kindness, and dignity made such an impression on me that I resolved when I returned home to be a more consecrated worker in the movement which I had known since childhood. I diligently searched through Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and other Christian Science literature to find the reasons for my friend's freedom. As I did so I began to catch a glimpse of my true self. It was a joyful day when I realized that the qualities I admired always had actually been mine.

At one time I was manifesting the symptoms of influenza. Always before, the first manifestations of this illness were signals to prepare to slow down. Now my first thought was to call a Christian Science practitioner for help. She asked me if there was something I should like to do downtown. I felt that she did not understand the seriousness of my condition. However, I agreed to be taken to a Christian Science Reading Room, where I read, studied, and worked prayerfully.

Later as I climbed a long hill alone, self-pity disappeared, and I realized I was finally demonstrating pure reliance on God. I was well and have never again feared influenza.
