WHEREIN LIES SECURITY?

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

Many young people today, arriving at the age when they have to choose a career, give considerable attention to the degree of security which the career in question has to offer. This is a reasonable precaution. However, if their concept of security is based entirely on material law and human hypotheses, it may lead them astray, for the primary laws of life are spiritual and not material. They involve the allness and perfection of God, Spirit, and the reflected perfection of man in Spirit's likeness. Christ Jesus said (John 6: 63), "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."

Christian Science teaches that true motives come from God; hence it is important to keep one's motives under constant examination. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 454), "Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action."

If we examine the motives of one who turns away from the career of his choice to a career less congenial merely because it seems to offer more material security, we see that such an individual is letting himself be governed by a material sense of values, that he is putting his trust in matter rather than in Spirit.
