From earliest childhood I had...

From earliest childhood I had times of extremely serious mental depression. Some problem would come up, not necessarily anything very important, but I would continue to think about it until I could think of nothing else. Eventually I would land in a deep well of black despair, where for days I would grope blindly for light.

One day, while undergoing such an experience, I decided that this condition must be conquered. "How did I get into this pit of despondency?" I asked myself. The answer was that I had hypnotized myself.

Opening Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy to the chapter "Animal Magnestism Unmasked" I read until I came to this passage on page 103: "As named in Christian Science, animal magnestism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind. It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful. This belief has not one quality of Truth." This showed me what I had been doing. I had been accepting the thought that "evil is as real as good and more powerful."
