I am truly grateful for the understanding that health is a spiritual quality, not merely a physical condition. As a young child I was frequently absent from school because of illness. One day I was ill with a sore throat so severe that I could hardly talk or swallow. I had then begun to attend the Christian Science Sunday School, and after some discussion regarding whether to call a doctor or a Christian Science practitioner, my family left the decision to me. I chose the practitioner, who talked to me over the telephone and in a few loving, appropriate words conveyed to my thought such a sense of harmony that I was completely healed in one day. Furthermore, since that time, over fourteen years ago, illness has never caused me to be absent from any place.

About three years ago I twisted my ankle. The ankle and my foot began at once to swell and to be very painful. I immediately declared "the scientific statement of being," on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the correlative passage from the Bible (I John 3:1-3). With considerable effort I managed to walk normally enough not to attract attention or comment. The next day, sustained by the encouraging statement from Science and Health (p. 393), "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good," I taught Sunday School, went out to dinner with relatives, and attended a Christian Science lecture. When I reached home after the lecture I could walk quite comfortably, and by the next day I was free.

Five days before I flew to England to visit relatives I tripped on the steps at home and struck my face with force against the newel post. Immediately the flesh began to swell and to appear quite discolored. My first thought was how disagreeable it would be to have a black eye while traveling three thousand miles to meet my British relatives for the first time.
