A short time after my discharge...

A short time after my discharge from the Navy, following the Second World War, I began to manifest strange symptoms. Several competent medical men were consulted, and they told me I had multiple sclerosis. This, they said, would lead to a steady physical disintegration and to my being a cripple. Various electrical treatments were tried without success. Also daily injections of so-called wonder drugs were given me for about a year. I was then told that they could not cure me and that no known cure was in existence. This news left me very much dejected.

A kind neighbor gave my wife a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and suggested that we read it with an open mind. I halfheartedly started to read this textbook and became very much interested in it after two or three attempts to do so.

One paragraph in particular caught my attention. It reads (p. 162): "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." I realized that a change of base for my thoughts was very necessary. The following Wednesday my wife and I went to a Church of Christ, Scientist, and heard various testimonies of healing. We went home more interested than ever in the textbook.
