That God's law of freedom can...

That God's law of freedom can be made practical in human experience was proved to me while I was in Japan in 1941. I had been there for my summer vacation and had already prepared to return home when suddenly all roads were closed while the armed forces were being transported to Manchuria. I was desperate. I had to be home at a certain date, for at that time I was the head of a music school and had to make arrangements for examinations and to open the school. I tried to explain all this to the authorities, but to no avail. In our Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly for that week were references to passages from pages 225-227 in Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy so wonderfully discusses the subject of liberation. I caught some gleams of the truths presented here and decided to go to Yokohama to see a Christian Science practitioner. We had a lovely talk, and I left her office reassured.

On entering the hotel after returning to Tokyo I felt quite uplifted to find a note sent to me from the Tourist Bureau. I immediately went there and was advised to obtain a special permit from the police. This I did, and to the great astonishment of my friends I appeared home just in time.

The end of World War II found me in Manchuria, China. From the very first I wanted to leave, but all departures were barred. The longer I remained the more hopeless my situation became. After some time I decided to rely entirely on Christian Science and to work out my problem in a scientific way. I remembered how the right understanding of liberty and freedom had solved a similar problem for me once before, and since the law of Truth is immutable, I knew this law could not fail me now.
