Signs of the Times

Rev. N. Pickering in an article in the Christchurch Times, England

Sunday observance is not for the Christian a law to be obeyed, but an invitation to be accepted.

There is one main guiding [rule] to determine the nature of a Christian's behavior. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength; ... and ... thy neighbour as thyself." Applied to Sunday, it means that the Christian will use the day to cultivate his friendship with God and with his fellows. It follows automatically that corporate worship will be of vital importance. However important and indispensable may be the individual's approach to God, which can be carried out at any time, and the gathering of a group of like-minded people, which may be a matter of private arrangement, nothing can replace the meeting of young and old, rich and poor, with the single intent to praise and magnify Him, ... to learn His will, and to devote themselves anew to His service.
