For the many benefits received...
For the many benefits received during the years I have been a student of Christian Science I am most grateful. My deepest gratitude, however, is for the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Through the study of this book many of Mrs. Eddy's statements have become my good and constant companions, indeed "a very present help in trouble." I could cite many instances in which the application of Truth through the rules given in Science and Health has brought relief from pain, supply in time of need, and fruitful activity in time of unemployment. Following is one such experience.
After attending a convention in western Canada, I was scheduled to make the return trip to my home by plane. The trip required the use of three different air lines, with connections at three different transfer points. Upon reporting at the starting point of my journey to check in, I was advised by the young woman at the ticket counter that the plane which I was to take on the first leg of the trip was reported grounded somewhere in Idaho and that if it arrived at all it would be considerably delayed.
My first impulse was to cancel my ticket and try to make train reservations. Then I decided the right thing to do was to go to the Christian Science Reading Room just around the corner and do some metaphysical work. As I walked to the Reading Room the word delayed kept coming to my thought. So upon reaching the Reading Room I began work by looking up the definition of "delay" in the dictionary. As I pondered this definition the word retard stood out in my thought, and I then turned to the Concordance to Science and Health and looked up references on the word retard. On page 283 of Science and Health I found this illuminating statement by Mrs. Eddy: "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action." "Inertia" I found in the dictionary to be a material law governing bodies at rest and in motion. Since it was a material law, I realized it to be powerless, having no place in man's true experience. I continued to ponder this truth and then closed the treatment with a prayer for guidance.
