Christian Science was presented...
Christian Science was presented to me at a time when I was desperately in need of help, having been under the care of doctors for one thing or another for many years. I had been employed for ten years in a large city hospital, and when I retired, due to ill-health, I was taking a tonic to give me strength and medicines for anemia, low blood pressure and fainting spells, and for the relief of constipation. I was sick in body and mind. I was so confused that I did not care whether I lived or died, and my home life was discordant and in danger of breaking up.
At that time the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was offered to me. I had held an antagonism to what I thought Christian Science was for twenty years, while really knowing nothing at all about it. However, the chapter on Prayer convinced me that this religion was what I was looking for—it made sense to me; so I continued reading. In fact. I could not put the book down. The reading of this great book caused a complete change in my thinking and aroused a desire to be good and do good. I began to attend a Church of Christ, Scientist, regularly and avidly listened to testimonies of others' experiences, hoping I would hear of healings of difficulties that coincided with my own. I memorized statements of truth from the textbook and drew upon them for help constantly. I saw immediately a change taking place in my condition.
My first healing was that of a headache while I was repeating some of the statements from "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). I consulted a Christian Science practitioner and worked along with her, gaining a greater understanding of the truth. There were many faults of character to overcome. This was not easy to do, but I tried to be obedient to God's leading, since my first desire was to follow in the footsteps of the Way-shower. The medicine chest had been emptied of all the remedies therein after the first visit to the practitioner. During the year that followed, many healings took place, including the healing of anemia, low blood pressure, and fainting spells. The first one was of constipation. Chronic headaches and tonsillitis and a toothache were overcome, and my strength returned daily, so that by the time I applied for church membership, a year later, my mental outlook had completely changed, and I felt stronger in every way and happier than I had been for years.
