Health, vigor, joy brought into experience

I am grateful to be a living witness to Truth as revealed through Christian Science. When a child I was considered frail, and as a consequence many diseases—blood poisoning resulting in lockjaw, scarlet fever, cuts and bruises from accidents, nervous exhaustion, and St. Vitus's dance—were a part of my experience. All were healed through the application of the truths of Christian Science, but it was not until I became a young woman that vigor, joy, peace, and serenity were understood and demonstrated as my true heritage.

Many years ago I became ill with pneumonia. My parents saw the gravity of the situation and called for assistance from a consecrated practitioner and two Christian Science nurses. There was such a great sense of weariness and heavy responsibility that I just wanted to let go and rest. One of the nurses helped to break this mesmerism by emphatically declaring that God had work for me to do, important work, and that I must be up and about it. I remembered that one of my parents had once remarked that death could not touch me if I would not consent to it.

These two thoughts kept reappearing as angel messages through several days of fog and delusion. On a day when a crisis seemed imminent, the practitioner came to the house and sat by the bed, making demands upon me to recognize my spiritual selfhood, until finally the fear left, peace was restored, and life was maintained. Through this experience came a lessening of the burden of false responsibility; and a case of athlete's foot, an appetite for tea and coffee, and also a lack of love for my fellow man were healed.
