At a time when living and working...
At a time when living and working space seems to be at a premium, I should like to tell how Christian Science not only supplied my need, but awakened me to greater appreciation of Truth.
I had spent many fruitless days over a period of five months searching for a suitable place in which to carry on my work. I had done everything humanly possible with no results. In desperation I finally did what I should have done in the first place: I refused to believe the false evidence of the material senses and realized the allness of God. Specifically, I knew that each of God's ideas includes not only right activity, but the environment for that activity. Immediately upon declaring and realizing this truth, I was prompted to pick up the telephone book and turn to a map of the city and the subway systems. Inscribing a circle on the map, with my home as the center, I realized that within that area of convenient commuting distance there was a section of the city which I had never visited and a subway system leading thereto on which I had never been. Holding to the truth that divine Mind directs, I proceeded at once to investigate this unknown area. When I emerged from the subway, I walked with assurance, and within three blocks I found exactly the type of place I wanted.
My previous limited way of thinking had included only the possibility of renting a place, but during a discussion of terms it was revealed that the ownership of the piece of property was in a state of flux, and that it would be possible for me to purchase it for a reasonable sum. The total was exactly the amount I had in the bank. I thanked God and established my workshop. But the neighborhood was a so-called tough one, and my friends warned me to beware of the children. I liked them and became quite friendly with them. However, one morning very early, when I was at home sleeping, I awoke with a start, having the feeling that all was not well in my workshop. Immediately I realized that "except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain" (Ps. 127:1). I then went back to sleep and at the regular time proceeded to the shop. I found my window broken and my radio gone. I reported the matter to the police, but continued to realize that divine Mind protects. Just before I left at night, two of the boys knocked and told me I could find my radio at my back door. It had been returned. I notified the police, and they refused to believe me, because it was the first time in the precinct that anything which had been reported stolen had been returned.
