In February, 1942, it became my duty to serve on a cruiser which was later to take a leading part in the defense of Java. Within an hour or two after I joined the ship she was on her way to lead a surprise attack on the enemy. I turned to Christian Science to still my fears, claiming the safety and protection that are man's at all times. The action was successful and our ship was neither fired upon nor called upon to fire a shot.

Some days later, when conditions to me looked anything but promising, our ship was in harbor, so I went ashore alone and sat quietly in a field. There I prayed that prayer of Jesus (Matt. 26:39), "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." The answer came to my thought in these words: "The way out is through." I saw that I could pass through whatever might seem to prevail around me without being touched, because my spiritual, immortal selfhood cannot be touched by error of any sort but is forever intact. This angel thought from God, Mind, brought me great assurance and peace. On page 581 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy gives a definition of angels, which reads in part, "The inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality."

When the day arrived for final battle, we put to sea. When the battle began, instead of watching the sense testimony around me, I turned my thought to the allness of Spirit and my indestructibility in Spirit. Silently but constantly I prayed for myself and others, affirming the truth to counteract all fears and suggestions of evil.
