"Go forward"

Spiritually interpreted, the land of promise to which Moses led the children of Israel is the same land sought by all true followers of the Lord. It is the land of Soul to the Christian Scientist, and his journey thereto is typical of the forty years' wanderings of the Israelites through the wilderness. Fraught with meaning to us, as it was to them, is the Old Testament promise which reads (Num, 14:8.9): "If the Lord delight in us. then he will bring us into this land, and give it us .... Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land."

Foremost among the qualities expressed by Moses as the leader to this promised land, this land of peace, harmony, and abundance, are those of humility, courage, and obedience—qualities indispensable to the growth and progress of every Christian Scientist. The command to us, as it was to Moses, is always, "Go forward." No Red Sea is able to halt that follower who is aware that these three God-qualities of thought belong to and are expressed by man in His image. Let us seek out their true meaning, measure our thinking and acting according to their standard, and claim them.

We cannot even start on our journey without humility. It was Moses' first lesson and required his relinquishment of any personal sense of responsibility or inability. In short, it demanded his absolute reliance on God. Mary Baker Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 354). "Experience shows that humility is the first step in Christian Science, wherein all is controlled, not by man or laws material, but by wisdom. Truth, and Love."
