Children of Light

Throughout the Bible great stress is laid on the thought of light, from the command of God in the first chapter of Genesis to St. John's apocalyptic prophecy of the new heaven and new earth where there would be no need of the sun to give light, for the glory of God and the spiritual idea would be the light thereof. It was in this light that God saw everything that He had made and found it very good, the climax of His creation being man in His own image and likeness, to whom was given dominion over all the earth.

Speaking of this light on page 504 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says, "This light is not from the sun nor from volcanic flames, but it is the revelation of Truth and of spiritual ideas." Does it not follow then that only in the light of Truth, of spiritual revelation and understanding, can the reality of creation be found and one's real identity as man be seen in its true light? St. Paul must have had a clear vision of this truth when he wrote to the Thessalonians, "Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness."

What does it mean to be a child of light and not of darkness? On the same page of Science and Health quoted above we read: "Spirit is light, and the contradiction of Spirit is matter, darkness, and darkness obscures light." Here is our answer. To be a child of light and not of darkness is to be a child of Spirit and not of matter, to be the very good expression of Love and Truth and Life.
