Watching One Hour

Who is there that has not felt the pathos and the tragedy of Christ Jesus' words when he was praying in the garden? At the darkest moment in his career, when he was called upon for his greatest proof of the presence of God, he reached out to those whom he loved and whom he had supported. Now he needed their support, and he asked them to pray with him. They failed him and in the loneliness of mental desertion he asked Simon Peter that momentous question. "What, could ye not watch with me one hour?"

He had turned to his friends and found them wanting. Now he turned wholly to God and received the support he needed. No more did he expect anything of the human sense of existence. He accepted the fact of spiritual existence and sought no other strength.

How often we, as followers of Christ Jesus and students of Christian Science, have felt that had we had that opportunity we should not have been found wanting, but should have met his request with an hour of earnest prayer and help.
