The Harmony of Being

Personal sense seems to be forever presenting to us a picture of some particular condition, environment, or relationship as being eminently desirable and essential to our harmony and well-being. Until we learn differently in Christian Science, we are apt to believe that these pictures of personal sense have power to give us an awareness of harmony, or to take it away.

Through the teachings of Christian Science we come to understand that "man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of God including all right ideas" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 475). Harmony, then, is one of the "right ideas" which comprise our spiritual selfhood. This being so, our consciousness of harmony must be perfect and remain forever intact, never dependent upon any person, place, or thing for realization, and never increased nor decreased by any material picture or circumstance claiming to be our experience. That this is true was proved in the following experience of a Christian Scientist.

This student, accustomed to living in a beautiful home in the city, equipped with every comfort and modern convenience, went with her family to reside for several months in a very old farmhouse which was devoid of any conveniences whatsoever. Besides this, they were two and a half miles from the village, and because of conditions resulting from the war were unable to secure a telephone, enough gas to use their car for transportation, or any household help. They were also without running water, electricity, the use of a radio, blinds for the windows, or any ice and since the weather was extremely hot, lack of ice and blinds made conditions exceptionally trying. At the same time, the student had a heavy cold and fever and an annoying irritation of the skin. Needless to say, the entire situation was most distressing.
