In the Court of the Areopagites
Ye
men of Athens, what intention brought
Your footsteps eager to the hill of Mars?
To hear a message new upon the ears,
Some new philosophy, and strangely taught?
Yet your heart went the lighter as it caught
Paul's golden words that stilled its latent fears,
Brought a release, and banished all the tears,
And showed the unknown God, whom you had sought.
Ever to them of the receptive part,
Damaris, Dionysius beside,
Who come neither to wonder nor deride,
Truth enters healingly upon the heart,
Dispels the dross, leaves the pure gold refined,
And brings each thought and deed to God aligned.
