Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
Hackensack, New Jersey (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hackensack, held two dedication services on Sunday, March 21, 1943.
In December, 1904, the church was organized, and until 1924, when the services were held in the edifice at Hamilton Place and Prospect Avenue, members met to worship in the Washington Institute and junior Order Hall.—Bergen Evening Record.
Winfield, Kansas (First Church).—The new edifice of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Winfield, was formally dedicated on Sunday, March 28, 1943, in the morning and afternoon.
The building fund had been open for a number of years. Every cent was voluntarily donated without any drive for funds. Contributions from members and friends of the church have made possible this new edifice.—Courier.
Marshall, Texas (First Church).—First Church of Christ. Scientist, Marshall, was dedicated at a service held on Sunday morning, April 4, 1943.
The church edifice, on the corner of West Burleson and North Franklin Streets, was erected on a lot purchased in 1922, but was not entirely complete and free from debt until late in 1942.
The first unit, which included the auditorium, was completed and paid for in 1923. The second unit was completed last fall.
The Christian Science movement in Marshall was begun in 1888 by four women, who met twice a week to read and study the Christian Science textbooks, the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As the years passed, more and more attendants were added to the number, and for a few years meetings were held at the Capitol Hotel. After that building burned, services were held in rooms located over the Marshall National Bank.
Toward the end of 1896, a building at the corner of Houston and Lafayette Streets was donated, to be used as a church edifice. This building was sold, however, when the present location was purchased. —News Messenger.
El Monte, California (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, of El Monte, held dedication services on Sunday, April 11, 1943. One service was held during the morning and the other in the afternoon.
