Contrary to "A.L.'s" vehement declarations, Christian Scientists are students of the Bible and study the Scriptures consistently. The first tenet of Christian Science leaves no doubt about this. It reads as follows (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 497): "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."

If it comes to a question of orthodox Christianity, the best test is surely whether the original teaching of the Master is being strictly adhered to. Few Christians will deny that Christ Jesus expected his followers to make the Christian teaching practical, not only in the healing of sin, but also in the healing of disease. His words, as quoted in Mark 16:17, 18, have just as much significance today as when they were uttered: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

Thus Christian Scientists have achieved and are achieving remarkable results in the healing of sin, sorrow, and disease. They could not expect to accomplish these works unless they were ready to live in Christian fellowship with others.
