As soon as I was introduced to Christian Science I recognized its value and respected its teachings and author.

Some time later, feeling the need of counsel, I called on an experienced Christian Science practitioner. During one of my earlier visits to her office I had been instantaneously healed of the use of tobacco, a habit which I had had from early youth. This healing has been of great help to me when I have had a difficult situation to meet.

I had been studying the Lesson–Sermons for a very short time and knew very little about the subject. I did, however, desire to show in some way my appreciation of the good I had already experienced. I felt that giving up tobacco would in a measure be tangible evidence. In Science and Health Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 1), "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." Right desire or prayer on my part, together with the practitioner's clear understanding of God's allness, oneness, presence, and power, brought about the healing.
