Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
Trenton, Missouri (Society).—Christian Science Society, Trenton, dedicated its church building on Sunday, December 14, 1941.
The dedicatory services were held in conjunction with the regular Sunday services. The dedicatory history was read by the First Reader.
On October 23, 1911, Christian Science Society, Trenton, was organized, and in January, 1913, a Reading Room was established. For a number of years services were held in buildings in the downtown district.
In May, 1938, the society's present building was purchased, and, after some remodeling of the interior, it was opened for services in June of the same year.
The society is a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, founded by Mary Baker Eddy.—The Republican Times.
Stuart, Florida (Society).—The new church edifice of Christian Science Society, Stuart, was formally dedicated on Sunday morning, March 1, 1942. A historical sketch was read. This follows, in part:
"Twenty–eight years ago the first students interested in Christian Science in this community began to hold services. That was in 1914, when a group of residents on the South Fork of the St. Lucie River met at one another's homes for Sunday services.
"In August, 1922, Christian Science Society, Stuart, was organized. Recognition of the new organization was given by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1940 the society acquired property on East Fourth Street, and at this location has been constructed a substantial and beautiful church edifice.
"Today our new building, property, and the equipment are entirely free of debt. Our achievement was made possible only by the many generous contributions from members and friends and the financial assistance made available under the terms of the will of Selina C. Cornish, together with a grant from the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy.
"The first services were held in the new church building on Sunday morning, February 22, 1942, when the auditorium was filled to capacity."—Stuart News.
Croydon, Surrey, England (First Church).—Morning and evening dedicatory services of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Croydon, were held on Sunday, July 5, 1942.
About the year 1908, Christian Science services were started in the homes of two Christian Scientists, one at Sutton and the other at Upper Warlingham. The Gymnasium Hall, High Street, Croydon, was rented in January, 1911, and recognition of Christian Science Society, Croydon, was given by The Mother Church in the following July.
Very soon after, a Sunday school was commenced and a Reading Room opened. About the end of that year larger premises were found at No. 96 High Street. The first lecture was given in the Public Hall in November, 1911. Two years later the society reorganized and was recognized as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Croydon.
The continued growth of church and Sunday school necessitated still more commodious premises, and eventually, in 1919, a church edifice in Dingwall Road which had been built by the Congregationalists became vacant, and was purchased by the Christian Scientists.
The structure of the edifice—which had been erected in 1865—was by no means perfect, and the accommodation it provided became in every way inadequate to meet the growing need of the church.
In 1936 the work of demolition and reconstruction began. Much of the old structure was removed and the present modern edifice was erected, including further enlargement of the Sunday school.
The first services in the new building were held on Sunday, June 27, 1937, and final payments on the building were made in September, 1940.

Lynwood, California (First Church).—Dedicatory services were held by First Church of Christ, Scientist, Lynwood, on July 19, 1942, at two services, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
During the service a short history was read by the First Reader, which follows in part:
"The first Christian Science services in Lynwood were held in May, 1924. In October, 1925, Christian Science Society, Lynwood, was organized, and became an authorized branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
"In October, 1930, the church was incorporated and the title was changed to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Lynwood.
"Services were held in various locations until 1934. On June 1 of that year, the present church home was started, and opening services were held in the completed building on July 15."
In addition to this history, the following information was obtained. The Sunday school of this church was organized in October, 1924. The first lecture was given in October, 1926, while the organization was still a society, and one has been given each year since. The Reading Room was opened in January, 1927, and is now housed in the convenient and pleasant location at 11609 Long Beach Boulevard.—Tribune.
