When Christian Science was...

When Christian Science was first brought to my notice, a good many years ago, I was seeking something I could not define. It was only when a friend lent me a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I discovered that there was an actual Science by which one's life could be governed, that I was perfectly satisfied that the way was before me.

It seemed difficult to comprehend the fact that matter is not substance. One of the first demonstrations of healing I made came about when I caught a glimpse of this truth. I had been reading "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health (p. 468), in which Mrs. Eddy says, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter." As I pondered this I held up my hand and looked at it, asking myself how I could believe it was not substance, when I could see it and feel it. Then something of the spiritual nature of substance dawned upon me, and for the first time I was able to grasp in a degree the meaning of that scientific statement.

In the afternoon, when I was helping to fold up a camp bed which had stuck fast with rust, it suddenly collapsed and my finger was trapped by a rusty clamp and cut open to the bone. Quickly remembering that it was the same hand I had held up earlier, I was able to know that substance had not been damaged. After the first acute pain, which soon subsided, I did not look at the finger, and held steadfastly to the glimpse of spiritual light that I had seen in the morning.
