Christian Science has been my...
Christian Science has been my only physician for over twenty years. During this time I have been healed of influenza, hemorrhoids, profanity, and of the tobacco habit. My daughter has been healed of measles, scarlet fever, and ivy poisoning. In 1934 my wife was injured in an automobile accident: one ankle was sprained and two ribs were broken. This condition was healed quickly through Christian Science treatment. It was necessary for her to wear a house slipper instead of a shoe for one day, after which the ankle was normal. Less than one half of a day was spent in bed, and there was no material aid of any kind used.
About five years ago, while on a visit with relatives, we made up a party and went for a swim in Lake Erie. The site was one of the numerous beaches on the American side, where one can wade out about a quarter of a mile before it is necessary to swim. After some time of this sport the rest of the party decided that they had had enough and went in toward the shore, but as this was my first swim in a lake for three or four years, I was reluctant to end it, and decided to take another swim out into the lake.
After swimming out for perhaps a quarter of a mile past the wading point, my strength left me very suddenly, and I could not stay on top of the water or get my breath. I began to choke and flounder around. At first I feared I would drown. I could not call out, because I was choking, and even if I could have called, human help was too far away to hear. These suggestions came to me in a flash, but almost instantly on their heels to disperse them came the realization that God was ever present and all the help I needed; that God was my Life, the source of my strength, and that I had nothing to fear. I believe that I had a sense of gratitude for this appearing of the Christ even before I realized that I had turned over on my back and was swimming toward the shore with long, easy strokes, my breath coming quite naturally. When I reached the point where I could wade the rest of the way to the shore, I felt as strong as when I had started.
