Among the Churches
Current Notes
Norwood, Ohio (First Church).—First Church of Christ, Scientist, Norwood, having met its entire indebtedness of $93,500, dedicated its edifice on Sunday, November 23, 1941.
According to the rules of the organization, a Christian Science church may not be dedicated until it is completely free from debt.
Dedication services were held in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Norwood, became an authorized branch of The Mother Church in April, 1915. Services were held in Ideson Auditorium on Elsmere Avenue for seven years. Then quarters were taken in the First National Bank Building. Services were held there until the completion of the first unit of the present building in October, 1924.
The total cost of the edifice, together with its furnishing, approximated $252,000. The grant from the estate of Mary Baker Eddy was made under terms of her will, which specified that aid might be given Christian Science churches in paying their debts, after the greater portion had been paid by the church itself.—Enterprise.
North East, Pennsylvania (Society).—Christian Science Society, North East, held dedication services on Sunday, November 23, 1941, in the morning and afternoon. No building is ever dedicated by Christian Scientists until entirely free from debt. The following brief history of the society was read at the services by the First Reader:
"The history of the Christian Science movement in North East, Pennsylvania, extends over a period of thirty-five years. During the winter of 1906–1907, a group of people who had become interested in Christian Science began meeting together to study the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
"In the summer of 1909, a systematic study of the Christian Science Quarterly Lessons was begun, and regular Sunday morning and Wednesday evening services were held at the homes of the students. It was not until June, 1922, however, that this society was organized as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, being accepted by The Christian Science Board of Directors on August 12, 1922. At first, services of the newly organized society were held in a room in the First National Bank Building on South Lake Street, and later in rooms at the corner of Main and Vine Streets.
"In the spring of 1931, the society moved to more spacious quarters in a building at the corner of Main and Blaine Streets, remaining there until December 1, 1940. On October 7, 1940, at a special business meeting called for the purpose, it was voted unanimously to purchase the property at 11 Park Street. Work was begun shortly after that date, remodeling and decorating rooms in which to hold services, and on Sunday, December 1, 1940, the first service was held in this building.
"On February 19, 1941, the purchase price of the property was paid in full. This was made possible by the many generous contributions to the building fund, and the financial aid made available under the terms of the will of the late Selina C. Cornish, together with a grant from the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy.
"During the past few months, besides painting and repairing the building on the outside, a Reading Room has also been equipped and is now in use.
"Christian Science Society, North East, Pennsylvania, is incorporated under the laws of the state, having received its charter on October 28, 1940."—North East Breeze.
