Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication
Province of Quebec, Canada.
One item only which needed correction appeared in the local press during the past year, and the editor gladly printed the reply prepared by this office. Most of the weekly newspapers continue to give us space for the weekly excerpts from the Lesson-Sermons. A number are making use of the "Gems of Thought" service begun last year. At first, most of the editors made use of these quotations as fillers, but since the value of this service has been explained, they have used the unit of six quotations, under appropriate headings as supplied. This service has a far-reaching influence for good, since one quotation from our Leader's writings is included each week. Both the daily and the weekly newspapers printed reports of the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, and good accounts of the work of The Christian Science Wartime Committee of The Mother Church (in Canada) were given space. Reprints of articles and editorials from The Christian Science Monitor are frequently found in the local and weekly papers. Only twice during the past year was it found necessary to call attention to the fact that material from the Monitor had been used without giving proper credit. Letters of apology were received, with promise not to repeat the offense.
The exchange-for-advertising plan is still very popular among editors. Many are taking advantage of this plan, and the following letter received from an editor is typical of the esteem in which our daily newspaper is held: "I want to express my sincere appreciation of your offer.... I personally consider The Christian Science Monitor to be the finest newspaper, without exception, that it has been my privilege to receive, and I never miss an opportunity of reading its news and inspirational columns. I feel that whatever we may do in return is altogether too inadequate to repay, not merely the subscription itself, but the great contribution the Monitor is making to the cause of democracy."
