Because the Science of Christianity reveals an infallible divine Principle governing man and the universe, it enables those who follow its teachings to tread firmly and surely in unknown paths. This sure sense of divine direction has illumined my way with a steady light, particularly during the last few years.

Some years ago, through a sudden decision to close the institution which employed me, I was placed in a precarious situation, being in a foreign country where the possibilities of my re-employment seemed limited. My financial resources were slender, and I was some eight thousand miles from the place that had been home to me. Two offers were at hand, which would have provided living quarters and support, and, although I did not feel attracted to either of them, I at first thought I was obliged to choose between them or try to get home.

Then it became clear to me that, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 492), "For right reasoning there should be but onefact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence." As soon as I had taken this as my standpoint, and had given up the human belief about my situation, I saw that I should decline both offers. Having done this, I had two or three weeks of temporary work before me, and beyond that the future was a blank. Yet the wonderful assurance of God's unfailing direction spared me any sense of anxiety.
