When I compare my present condition to that of the time...
When I compare my present condition to that of the time when I first started studying Christian Science, it seems almost as if a miracle had occurred. I had always been considered a delicate child, being held down by many physical ailments: a weak heart, a very bad condition of the back caused by a fall, severe headaches, catarrh of the throat, and bronchial trouble, which caused an extremely bad cough that would last for weeks at a time. Indeed, I never knew what it was to pass many days without some ailment. Today I can joyfully say that all these conditions have entirely disappeared, and I enjoy greatly improved health because of a better understanding of God and man, gained through the study and application of Christian Science.
Every day I am more grateful for our Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and for our "Daily Prayer," as given us by Mrs. Eddy in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 4). It was some time after I had started reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy that I became interested enough to read the Lesson-Sermon. Even after I began reading it, I did it very spasmodically. Finally, I had such a beautiful, quick healing through reading it that, from that day on, it has been my first thought for the day. I had been suffering from a very severe case of ptomaine poisoning, and although I had called a Christian Science practitioner for help, the next morning my condition was not improved. I felt very much discouraged, but decided that, instead of yielding to this sense of discouragement, I would study the weekly Lesson. I was only about halfway through when, to my surprise, I found that I was absolutely free from every sense of an illness which had seemed unbearable.
We have had wonderful proof that Christian Science, properly applied, heals business troubles as well as physical ones. A few years ago my husband became discouraged about business, saying that it was—and would continue to be, as far as he could see—at a standstill. Instead of accepting this, I went to a Christian Science practitioner, and through my gaining a better understanding of what constitutes real business and activity, the condition was met. In about a week we received the largest business assignment we had ever had, and it gave my husband a national reputation. We had to leave for the East on short notice, and we had a house which we decided to rent while we were away. The real estate agents were very discouraging about renting such a house at that time, but our place was rented for just the time we were to be away, and we were able to leave as scheduled.
