It was reported that Christian Science "ignores the reality...

It was reported that Christian Science "ignores the reality of evil," and that it denies "the atonement of Christ." An unbiased, careful perusal of the writings of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, will reveal to the sincere seeker after Truth that Christian Science, while denying the reality of evil—sickness, sin, disease, and death—on the basis that God, good, created all that is true and real, does not "ignore" evil's claim to reality; neither does it deny "the atonement of Christ."

To material sense, evil, sickness, sin, disease, and mortality appear to mortals to exist and to be very real. The testimony of the five physical senses is, however, not to be relied upon. Christ Jesus, our Exemplar and Way-shower, referred to evil, "devil," as a lie. He declared, "He is a liar, and the father of it." Of a woman whom he healed, who had been bowed together for eighteen years, "and could in no wise lift up herself," Jesus said that Satan had bound her.

If evil, sin, disease, and death were true in the absolute sense, they would be eternal, a part of the creation of the one God, who is infinite good, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent. But they are contrary to God's nature or character and must therefore be devoid of reality, for there is but one creator. Christ Jesus came to do God's will, and he healed every form of sickness and disease presented to him, and destroyed sin and death; and yet he declared, "I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." He clearly enjoined upon his followers and students that they must follow his example. The test of their understanding of the truth about God and His creation lay in their ability to emulate his works.
