It is to stand when all else seems to fall,
And lift your vision to a higher plane;
It is to see beyond the encircling pall
Of disappointment, and of grief and pain.
It is to watch and pray—and then to wait
In tranquil faith and hope that dwell apart;
It is to offer love in place of hate,
And touch with tenderness the aching heart.
Forgetting self to ease another's woe
Lights candles of compassion through the night,
That some lone wanderer may find the way
And point the path for other feet to go;
Thus from a tiny gleam may grow a light
That sheds its beams unto the perfect day.
