My first contact with Christian Science at a western...

My first contact with Christian Science at a western university over thirty years ago provoked the not unusual reaction of mildly humorous skepticism. Some of us took a sophomoric pleasure in "proving its illogicality" by means of formal Aristotelian syllogisms. But within two years my attitude was one of respectful consideration, for I saw a very dear friend healed almost instantaneously of pneumonia by absent treatment. Somewhat later this same friend regained complete hearing after many years of extreme deafness accompanied by chronic abscesses. She had been told by her doctor that she could never expect to hear because the ear drums were perforated and permanently impaired. With even a tiny grain of understanding of this new truth I had several healings. During all these intervening years Christian Science has been the only physician in our home.

My progress might have been faster had I devoted more earnest study to our Leader's works and participated more actively in the service of our Cause. But for a considerable time I did not identify myself formally with a Christian Science church, apparently because of a belief that I was too busy with my profession or that I could serve the Cause better in a university community by not wearing a denominational label. But whatever the mesmerism was, it was finally broken, and I can now express joyful gratitude for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church; for class instruction, and for the great privilege of teaching in the Sunday school.

I can gratefully record healings for myself and for my wife of burns, nervous indigestion, jaundice, bronchial pneumonia, appendicitis, heart trouble due to high altitude, fear of lack, and other disorders. Nor can I forget protection during many thousand miles of travel on land, on sea, and in the air. I am even more grateful that Christian Science offers a rational, positive, authoritative, and demonstrable outlook on life in this chaotic dream-world which the physical senses seem to have built up. This Science not only is reasonable and understandable, but is also the Comforter which Jesus promised. And what a comforter it is I am learning to know in working through the deep shadow cast by the passing on of my wife.
