I became acquainted with the teachings of Christian Science about eleven years ago, but I was not very earnest in taking up a thorough study of it until a seemingly stubborn difficulty tried to overwhelm me. Medical skill was unavailing to free me from a painful open sore on my foot.

Through the help of a Christian Scientist I learned how to gain a better understanding of the wonderful truths about God and man created in His likeness. However, the healing did not come at that time; on the contrary, the trouble seemed to be aggravated. In my extremity I clung more firmly to divine Love, and earnestly prayed that God would show me the way to become well. I frequently became aware of the "still small voice" pointing out to me many mortal faults; and in proportion as I made more constant endeavor to lay aside my material sense of self, I realized healing, proving the words of Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 243), "The same 'Mind ... which was also in Christ Jesus' must always accompany the letter of Science in order to confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets and apostles."

As I did further mataphysical work along this line, it became clear to me that my heavenly Father best knew what gifts I as His child most needed. My healing seemed to be delayed by my employing my thoughts too greatly with the material appearance, instead of knowing that I should not look to matter for either pain or well-being. Through this experience, which richly blessed me with spiritual treasures, I have learned that good health is the result of clear thinking, and when I endeavored to lift my consciousness above the appearance of matter, I was enabled to experience the healing. Now I understand that in reality as God's child I could never express anything but perfect harmony. It was only mortal sense which had held me enchained so long and prevented my beholding the true image as God created it.
