[Written for the Sentinel]

Unparted

For many wondering searching years
Hope said that we should part no more,
Somewhere beyond this place of tears,
Upon a farther, happier shore.

But shine, thou Truth-revealing light,
Till in thy radiant beam we see
Our dearly loved, though out of sight,
Unparted now from each, in Thee.

For heaven is here, Immanuel,
God with us—gratefully discerned;
While the eternal "Peace, be still"
Spans every gulf o'er which we yearned.

If from the earth friends fare away,
Or waken to a newer morn,
Love, their dear guide, doth equal stay
To bless, to comfort the forlorn.

The concept of the carnal mind,
Of mortal sense, we lay aside;
And part with it in thought to find
Love, Life, and man unchanged abide.

O Truth, illume this way of peace,
Though paths now cross, diverge, or run;
From parting show the sweet surcease
Where all in Christ—in Thee—are one!
