"Blessed are the merciful"

Observing the attitude of mortals toward one another, one is often impressed by the great need of the quality known as "mercy." A dictionary definition of "mercy" is, "Disposition to exercise compassion or forgiveness; ... willingness to spare or to help." What a beautiful disposition to cultivate—"willingness to spare or to help"! Were all to maintain this mental attitude toward one another, how much easier the pathway heavenward!

"As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise." "Blessed are the merciful." Thus spoke the Master. Were mankind to ponder and practice more fully these teachings, how many burdens would be lifted, how many weary hearts refreshed!

Speaking of the students' desertion of Jesus in his great hour of need, Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 49), "O, why did they not gratify his last human yearning with one sign of fidelity?" How often to-day do students of Christian Science fail to give their support to the honest efforts of other students. Thinking, perhaps, that they are not making a very good demonstration, or that they are taking a long time to work out a problem or are not as alert as they should be, is not supporting honest effort!
