A few days before Christmas, 1923, I fell in the street on my side and broke my upper arm. The pain was so intense that I could not get up immediately; but on declaring the truth, I managed to rise and return to the house. At the time I did not know whether the arm was broken or only badly sprained; however, I could not hold anything in my hand and was obliged to support the arm. Six hours later a doctor examined the arm. He said the arm was not broken, but badly sprained, and prescribed some ointment which I was to use. He also advised me to move the arm frequently and to massage it, so that it would not grow stiff. The arm became badly swollen and was soon black and blue, and I suffered intense pain. I could not bear even the slightest touch or movement, much less massage.
Then we asked a dear Christian Science practitioner for treatment. The pain abated, but returned when I dressed and undressed. One night about a fortnight later I awoke with much pain and felt sure that the arm was broken, even if the doctor had diagnosed otherwise. I clung steadfastly to God, knowing that the truth could join broken bones and heal them; that Truth is the only power. Having clung to the thought of God's omnipotence and ever-presence for some time, I felt—I shall never forget it—God's presence so wonderfully, and knew of a certainty that God would heal me.
Thanks to the practitioner's kind treatment the swelling on the arm had almost vanished. The next morning I went to a surgeon. He took an X-ray picture of my arm and called his chief assistant to look at it, remarking that in his opinion there had never been a case like this before and never would be again! The bone had been broken straight through, and then had joined together again more beautifully than if he had set it himself. The healing was progressing favorably.
