For many years previous to 1917, I suffered untold agony...
For many years previous to 1917, I suffered untold agony from severe pains in the lower region of my spine. Many times I had to remain in bed for twenty hours out of the twenty-four. At last I consulted a physician, and he ordered an X-ray photograph to be taken. This picture, he said, showed a tubercular condition of one of the spinal vertebrae. As he was unable to do anything for me, he directed me to an out-of-town physician who, he said, was an authority in cases of this kind. After an examination by this authority, an immediate operation was suggested as the only means left to relieve. me. This I refused to accede to. I then sought the advice of another authority, and he placed me in a medical hospital to be under observation for one week. At the end of the week's observation, during which I was X-rayed daily, this physician decided he would not operate. Instead, he measured me for a specially constructed steel body jacket, which I wore constantly for almost a year. The purpose of this was to relieve the pressure on the vertebrae.
As I was a graduate medical nurse, everything these physicians told me or suggested to me seemed real. One day while I was in Philadelphia to have this jacket adjusted, a relative suggested that I try Christian Science, but knowing nothing about its healings or teachings I hesitated for several days. Finally I decided to become interested in it; and upon my return home I sent for a practitioner, who lovingly showed me the light. After going over the Lesson-Sermon several times and reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Bible, I received a healing; so that within a month I was able to throw the steel jacket away.
I am very grateful to God for this healing. I am also very grateful to our beloved Leader, and for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church.
