Your recent issues contianed accounts of remarks made by a critic regarding Christian Science, in the course of which she classified it with new-thought, theosophy, and other kindred cults, all of which she claimed "were tried and found wanting centuries ago." It seems strange that a person who claims to be engaged in the holy work of spreading the gospel of Christ Jesus, should turn aside from this course in order to disparage the teachings of a church which is implicitly obeying the Master's command to heal the sick as well as to preach the gospel. As a matter of fact, Christian Science was tried nineteen centuries ago; and it was not found wanting, for Jesus and his disciples proved that sin and disease can be healed by the application of spiritual law, without the aid of material remedies. Moreover, the primitive church practiced Christian healing for about three hundred years after his ascension. It is the lack of this vital element in the so-called orthodox Christian churches of to-day that is causing humanity to look elsewhere for help; and thousands are finding health and happiness through the healing ministry of Christian Science.

Christian Science is in no way similar to new-thought or theosophy. While these methods rely upon the supposed ability of the human mind or will to correct its own mistakes, Christian Science teaches its students to look to the divine Mind alone for aid. Christian Science is not a system of philosophy, nor is it an intellectual cult; it is a religion which even a child may understand and practice. On page x of the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written: "The divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth. ... No intellectual proficiency is requisite in the learner, but sound morals are most desirable." No one need feel any alarm over the prophecy that Christian Science "cannot survive another generation." Within the brief period of fifty years its churches have encircled the globe, and the report of the past year's growth was the best in its history.
