The Awakening

To the one newly interested in the teachings of Christian Science, the thought of his spiritual self as being the real, and indeed the only self he has, the teaching that instead of living in a material body he lives in Soul, Mind, God, and receives from his divine source the power to govern harmoniously his body and all that he has thought of as his very existence, may seem hard to understand. Sometimes, indeed, it is only after much prayer and consecrated study of the Bible and of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," together with the other writings of Mrs. Eddy, that light begins to come to him.

He begins to see that instead of always having lived in a material body, he never has, but that as the child of God he has always lived, moved, and had his being in God, divine Mind, and that his supposed mortal existence has been but human beliefs and the seeming results of those beliefs. He is learning the entireness, the infiniteness of God, divine Mind, and of man's complete at-one-ment with Him; learning that all there is, is "infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468); that his whole experience is a thought-life, harmonious and happy when he is reflecting or manifesting the divine Mind, but very much the contrary if he believes in a material so-called mind and existence.

The student of Christian Science is learning that man is at all times reflecting this omnipotent Mind; that he can in no way be separated from it; that mortal existence is a dream, a dream that man lives in a material body, and that his seeming daily experiences are merely the experiences of this dream, from the unreality of which he must awaken, being relieved as he turns back to his infinite Principle and realizes the allness of good and the goodness of all. He begins to realize that even as the unpleasant experiences of a sleeping dream are destroyed and cast off as one rouses himself from sleep, so too the beliefs of the mortal waking dream are overcome and destroyed as one wakens to the truth of man's eternal coexistence with the divine Mind, God.
