Spiritual Joy

The Psalmist sang, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 591) Mrs. Eddy defines "morning" as, "Light; symbol of Truth; revelation and progress." Throughout the Bible the loving admonition to rejoice and be glad is iterated and reiterated. When the simple message of Truth and Love dawns on the consciousness, joy and happiness are planted where sorrow and sin had their abiding place. Christian Science also furnishes us with the understanding to divide between true thinking and false thinking, whereby to control our every thought and action and to demonstrate our unity with God.

One student well remembers a remark made by a Christian Scientist which awakened an earnest desire to know more about the teachings of Christian Science. It was in a dark hour, when the ways of life were not falling in pleasant places, that a dear friend whispered to her the blessed words "Christian Science." Discouraged and heavy-laden, and tired of the vanities of the world, she sought refuge in a Christian Science Reading Room. Here joy and gladness and peace were found; and it was learned that joy should characterize the lives of Christian Scientists, that there should be no such thing as a joyless, loveless Christian Scientist. She was told that it was not God's will that one of His little ones should suffer or be unhappy for one moment. These words brought new hope and courage, and a desire to know more about the one God, who sends joy and happiness and gladness, not sorrow, grief, and trouble.

This experience came at the time as a star of hope in a dark night; and almost immediately there was a lifting out of the slough of despondency into the blessed joy of living. The following words from Isaiah became illumined, and have since served as helpful waymarks along the way: "Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away."
