Owing to an accident while skating when twelve years...
Owing to an accident while skating when twelve years old, I suddenly had to exchange a life of happy work and activity for one of stillness and constant pain. For fifteen years I submitted to operations, surgical appliances, and treatments of all kinds, and at last was sufficiently healed so that I was able to walk and to live to some extent an ordinary life, a great surgeon telling me that the cure was mainly brought about by my determination to get well.
Then began what seemed worse to bear; for the years of inactivity and medicine-taking were said to have ruined my nervous and digestive systems, and life became an almost unbearable burden. I went from one nerve and diet specialist to another without receiving any lasting benefit; no new treatment or fad was left untried, but the result was always the same,—a slight improvement at the beginning, because of the fresh hope with which I was inspired, and in a short time a return of the old conditions, which gradually became more serious and confirmed.
All the years I had tried to be uncomplaining and patient, and often spent hours of the night in tearful prayer that God would somehow make me understand what I was trying to believe,—that He had sent all this suffering for my good; but the more I tried, the more hopelessly incomprehensible it was. I reached a stage when I could no longer take even medicated diet, and semistarvation was added to my other miseries. Then, when I seemed to be without God and without hope, I read an article in which Christian Science was mentioned. Much that was ridiculous and scornful was there written about it, but the ridicule and scorn made no impression on me; one fact alone stood out, and that was that the person who had tried Christian Science was said to have been healed! I went as soon as possible to the Christian Science Reading Room in the town where my home was, to find out something about this method of healing. I knew nothing but the name, probably owing to the fact that I had spent such a secluded life. I read a little in a copy of The Christian Science Journal, and noted with surprise the long lists of churches and practitioners' names, and among the latter I was instantly shown which, in all that number, was the one whose work would bring the healing truth to me.
