It is with a grateful and joyful heart that I remember the day on which I was led to Christian Science. It was in 1912. I was consumptive, and as even then I had no confidence in medicine, I went to a nature doctor for treatment. He wanted me to go to a sanatorium for consumptives; but as I resisted strenuously, he said he would not treat me any more. I told him I did not wish to be among sick people, but among well people; for then, perhaps, I would get well again. I was examined again in Dresden and received the same report. From then on the condition became worse from day to day, so that the thought that I must die became more and more persistent.

At that time a dear friend heard of Christian Science. A Herold was lent to her, which she gave me to read, and she offered to go to Dresden to a Christian Science practitioner for me. When she returned she brought me some Christian Science literature to read. At that time I could not understand how this could affect my health, but I read every day; and in a few days a change took place in me. I became hungry, whereas formerly I had often eaten nothing for days at a time. In about two weeks I felt entirely well, and in a month I went with my friend on a mountain trip, which made it necessary for us to walk for several hours every day. One day I became feverish. My friend applied what little she understood of the truth. The next morning I could get up, and we were able to continue our trip without any interruption. On the way home we had a picture taken and sent it to the practitioner, who wrote us that she would keep it for a remembrance. Then for the first time we realized that I had been healed through this short treatment.

In the fall of the same year I went to Dresden for the first time, where I bought a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which had just been translated into German, and began to read the Lesson-Sermons. With the help of Truth I have since overcome many things. Soon there came calls for me to help others, for all who knew me were astonished that I had got well so quickly and without medical aid.
