[Written for the Sentinel]

Thy Word

No other legacy I ask
Than that Thy Word reveals;
It searches every hope of men,
And human longing heals.

Thy promises meet all our needs,
And even then o'erflow
The channels open kept for them—

Well spanned by heaven's bow.

The wealth of love I have in Thee
So satisfies and fills
My waiting heart, its ardor glows
To share the love that stills.

But should these gifts I tightly clasp
Where selfish wants repose,
How can their measure be increased,
Which sharing only knows?

The visions of Thy peaceful courts
Urge tenderly to dwell
Within their habitation safe,
And fear no discord's hell.

As meekness and humility
My heavenward steps attend,
So doth the healing truth unfold,
Nor word nor deed offend.

With faith surrounded by Thy Word,
From past and future free,
The peace that comes from tasks well done
Unites me now with Thee.
