After spending many weeks in a hospital, with the best...
After spending many weeks in a hospital, with the best care afforded by the medical profession, and not receiving any benefits, I became unwilling to continue taking medicine; and, though friends implored and physicians prophesied and warned, I left the hospital and came to a large city on the Pacific Coast, where, amidst uncertain conditions of employment, without funds, and far removed from friendly aid, I related to a newly made acquaintance my very unhappy story, and this gentle girl directed my attention to Christian Science. A copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was opened, and I read the tenets of Christian Science, as given on page 497. It was plain to me that I had found what I needed; so, continuing to read each day, I saw my way grow brighter. My work, which up to that time was very unpleasant, took on a better aspect; and as I gained, in some measure, the concept of God as infinite good, much of the rush and harshness of the daily routine gave place to patience and kindness, toilsome duties became ways of usefulness, and unseemly errands avenues of joy. Where sighing had been, singing came; where discouragement had ruled, opportunity stood forth; instead of being alone among indifferent strangers, I was with helpful and loving friends.
Looking back to those first steps in the study of Christian Science, I am grateful to God for guidance bestowed through the channels of church services, lectures, loyal practitioners, the Reading Rooms, and our Christian Science periodicals,—grateful for my early recognition of the universal healing influence of these activities of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and grateful for the consecration, love, and unfailing patience of Mrs. Eddy, through whom these great blessings came to humanity.
Though a nurse trained under the system of materia medica, I gave up the use of drugs, and have not desired material remedies since the first day I began reading the textbook. I have been healed of many diseases (and without being confined to my bed), among them facial neuralgia, severe lesion of the knee joint, diphtheria; and I have been protected from injury in accidents. At a time of great sorrow and distress, when lack of courage would have caused me to be swept away, the regenerating truth of Christian Science bade me arise, and sustained, admonished, and pointed the way until a course of turbulent strife was changed, purified, calmed, and healed.
